Romeo the turkey, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Romeo was rescued in St. Louis, Missouri along with his ten brothers and sisters. They were running around the neighborhood and in the street, and after getting many calls from upset and concerned neighbors, we took them home to the Gentle Barn Missouri location that we had at the time. We already had a male turkey, and because male turkeys will fight over territory and females, we placed the males into loving homes of their own and brought Romeo to our California location. Romeo works hard to show off and get admiration, inspiring guests to call him handsome. He follows us around and always wants to be the center of attention; as well he should be.
At the Gentle Barn we remove the eggs so that if we have room for another bird, we can save one instead of making one. But, Romeo and his wife, Brave, outsmarted us and hid the egg until it was too late to remove it. Romeo not only protected Brave while she was nesting but sat on the egg each day to give Brave a break to stretch her legs and go outside. Romeo is an excellent husband and father and chaperones his son to teach him how to be a gentleman.
We are thrilled to have Romeo as part of our West Coast family! He brightens up our days and brings cheer to our barnyard.
