Read Mavis's Story ^{(In Memoriam)}

Mavis was one of 102,000 chicks born in an incubator and raised in a poultry farm. Genetically engineered to be full grown at 7 weeks old and destined for slaughter, we got to save her life, bring her home to The Gentle Barn, and use her story to raise awareness about the plight of these gorgeous, innocent creatures. Mavis was kind, sweet, full of joy, and loved her short life with us. Unlike the others, Mavis got to feel grass on her feet, fresh air on her face, and got to live 10 months with love, instead of 7 weeks in the dark, unable to breath. Mavis was so abnormally big that she could not walk at ten months. When acupuncture and vet care couldn’t keep her mobile or comfortable, we helped her out of her body, whispering thank you and we love you as she left.
