Read Jemima Puddleduck's Story (In Memoriam)
Jemima Puddleduck was bought as an Easter gift. The family was not prepared to have a baby duck and kept her in their bathtub until they realized that they were not allowed to have ducks at their house. Not knowing what to do with her, the family contacted us and we invited her to live with us in safety. Jemima taught so many guests and followers the negative impact of buying baby animals as gifts without forethought about the adults they will grow into or the commitment and care they will need. Jemima Puddleduck was a superstar of The Gentle Barn. Every single person who met her was dazzled by her. Her adorable waddle, her fluffy white feathers, her sparkling blue eyes, and her signature quack. Jemima had a ferocious appetite for blueberries and watermelon. When offered her favorite treats, she would gobble them up out of your hand like a high-powered vacuum. Everyone loved watching her swim in her pool. She would dive down and shoot up like a rocket then happily float for hours, when she was done she would flap her wings mightily, hop on her ramp, and waddle down. Jemima spent a lot of time with our turkeys, especially her good friends Hope and Neptune. They loved sunbathing together, taking naps snuggling up to each other, and finding tasty treats to eat in the barnyard together. Miss Puddleduck enjoyed guests near her, talking to her, and giving her treats. Jemima taught so many guests, especially children, about respecting animals' choice to interact or not, which is key to The Gentle Barn's mission. She will forever be in our hearts!
