Read Holy Cow's Story (In Memoriam)
Holy Cow has shown immeasurable resilience in her almost fourteen years of life. She was taken from her mom at birth, stomped so she could not walk, sent to slaughter at only a few weeks old, and then at The Gentle Barn persevered to learn how to walk, run, and play.
Holy Cow lost her mom at birth. I guess knowing how it feels to be orphaned gave her an empathy for all our other orphans. Holy adopted, raised, nurtured, and protected any orphan calves we brought in. Holy raised dozens of calves and gave them the love to heal, forgive, and trust. The last one she dutifully raised was John Lewis Thunderheart, licking him, meditating with him, and watching over him when I wasn't there.
Holy Cow gave out hundreds of thousands of hugs in her lifetime, healing, raising, and loving us all. It is impossible to imagine our barnyard without her, but I am so grateful that she left on her terms and is now at peace. It was a privilege and honor to know her!
