Read Charlie's Story (In Memoriam)
Charlie the rooster was rescued from life in a cage. He was incarcerated for so long that his toes were deformed, and his nails curled into his foot. He loved his new home at The Gentle Barn, and all his new girl friends. He loved being a pet and would put his head down so you could groom his neck. He would also come running to me when I called his name. Once in a while he would puff up and go for some one's shoe so we wouldn't forget that he was a tough guy, but that didn't fool me because I knew that he was just a big sweetie pie.
Charlie passed away at the age of 9, leaving his widow Rebecca the hen. Rebecca was inconsolable at the loss of her mate. We all miss him so much. Charlie taught me that chickens are like dogs that have feathers. Charlie was loyal, affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please.
Thanks Charlie, for reminding us that we really are all the same, we just look different.
